A resolution is a chore you forget by February. A name for your year is a direction you carry. Picture the future clearly enough and it starts pulling you toward it.

Panic mode

The clicker died backstage.

Moments before I was supposed to walk out, my clicker stopped working. I couldn't advance my slides, and I was already standing backstage.

When I'd tested it earlier, the room was empty and everything worked fine. But I was the only one on a Mac. Everyone else had PCs, the computer sat at the back of the room, and I hadn't considered what would happen once the seats filled up. People, bodies, signal interference, none of it crossed my mind. It stopped completely.

Worse, I don't use a normal clicker. I use my phone, and had through every single practice, because it shows me the current slide and the next slide at the same time. So I called my then-girlfriend. She ran up to the booth and clicked me through the entire talk, slide by slide. She'd heard me rehearse enough to know the beats and the timing cold. It was absolutely incredible. She saved me.

That's why, when you watch the talk, you never see me holding a clicker and the slides just advance on their own. And it's why you'll catch me glancing back at the screen a few times, quietly checking which slide was coming next.
