An eight-year experiment

The Kanye
Music Project.

Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, the whole album, stripped down to one man and one acoustic guitar. The chords were there the whole time. The hard part is hearing them.

The project, in motion

The premise

Eight years. One guitar.

Most great pop songs hide a simple chord progression under a wall of production. If you can find the chords, you can find the song. For eight years I've been finding the songs, one track at a time, until the whole album was done.

I recorded the full record acoustic and put it on YouTube. The notes on each piece live in the YouTube description: half music theory, half journal entry. If you play, you can play along.

The rules

The constraints I gave myself.

Transposing a whole album down to one acoustic guitar was about juxtaposition, something Kanye and I are both big fans of. The opposite of those big beats made in a studio in Hawaii. Taking what's there and stripping it down to one person. No loop pedals, no effects, just an acoustic guitar, played at sunset inside a Chicago apartment along the El.

Recording nerves

The parts that kept me up.

Live around Chicago

Working it out on stage.

Eight years didn't happen at a desk. A huge part of the work was getting out and playing these songs live, all over Chicago: back bars, breweries, open mics. Performing them is how you find what actually works, so I road-tested the arrangements in real rooms as much as I refined them at home.

The first five songs of the album, start to finish, live at Speakeasy in Edgewater.
"Power," with Dliva. Northside Bar, Wicker Park. June 2019.
"Runaway," with Dliva and Jared. The Point, Wicker Park.
"Power." The Point, Wicker Park.
"Gorgeous." MadCats, Palatine. August 2022.
"The Blame Game," with Ryan on cello. Pollyanna Brewery, Roselle. May 2023.
"Runaway." Chicago. February 2023.
"Runaway." Logan Bar. April 2021.
"Runaway." Chicago. July 2018.

One more, off the album

Creep / Ghost Town.

An acoustic mashup of Radiohead's "Creep" and Kanye's "Ghost Town", performed live at Pollyanna Brewery in Roselle, with me, Allan, and Ryan on cello.

And here's an earlier rendition, before Ryan and his cello joined.
